Aubergine Black Beauty Seeds

Aubergine Black Beauty Seeds

Aubergine Black Beauty Introduced about 1910 and is long popular with home gardeners is this reliable and medium early variety. It has an excellent yield of shiny, near-black skinned fruit throughout the summer season producing large, 10-15cm long, smooth, glossy, round-oval, purplish-black fruits with good flavour, which can be used in all kinds of delicious Mediterranean recipes.

Aubergines can be grown outside in very sheltered sunny sites next to a south facing wall in the south, if the weather is very good but it is really best to grow them undercover. They require long hot periods to crop & our weather is very unpredictable.

The best & most reliable crops are produced in polytunnels/greenhouses in the soil or in containers or grow bags.

Aubergine Black Beauty Vegetable Seed Information

Seed Quantity: Approx 20 seeds per pack.
Site: Polytunnel/greenhouse.
When to Sow:
January to April undercover at 20C.
How to Sow:
Sow 2 seeds to a module and if both seeds germinate - thin out the weakest seedling. When 10cm tall 'prick out' into pots and keep at 18-20C. Transplant into greenhouse soil when first flowers appear, space 40cm each way or 1 plant to a 20cm pot or 2 to a grow bag and keep indoors. When the plant reaches 20cm tall 'pinch out' growing tip to encourage it to bush out.
Care:
Containers can be moved outside if the weather is very hot and brought back in if it turns cold. Support stem with a cane as this helps as the fruits become heavy. As soon as the flowers set mist with tepid water to encourage a good fruit set (this also helps to deter red spider mite). Feed with potash rich tomato feed once a week when the first fruit has set. Once 7-8 fruits have set remove other flowers to encourage the plants energy into producing good aubergines.
Harvest: August to mid-October whilst the fruits are still shiny and about 10-15cm long by cutting with a sharp knife.
